Overview of the School

The Nicholson Syrian Girls Higher Secondary School and Training Home was started in 1910 by the late Mrs. F. S. Nicholson and Miss .S. C. McKibbin. The control is now vested with a Board of Trustees and managed by a Board of Management according to the provisions of the Trust Deed made by the donors. Miss M D Ward served as the Manager of the school from 1910 till 1960. The school is situated on a hill overlooking Tiruvalla – Kozhenchery road about three kilometers away from Tiruvalla town in Pathanamthitta District of Kerala State now known also as– God’s Own Country. Students are prepared for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination and Higher Secondary examination. Besides the school subjects, needle work, arts and crafts, music and dance are also taught. Since 2007 CBSE programme is also launched by the school.

There are parallel divisions with English and Malayalam as medium of instruction in all standards. Examinations are conducted at the end of each term.

Strict manners and discipline are instilled in the pupils in the dining hall as well. The school has the ideal of ‘Public Schools of England’ without the practice of segregation and privilege but with social equality in all possible aspects of living in the boarding and studying in the school. The school encourages each girl to do every thing by herself. Spreading and rolling up the bed, washing their own clothes, washing plates after eating, sweeping and keeping tidy the class rooms and chapel and so on. Simplicity is the warp and weft of the fabric of life of the school and the boarding right from its start and even today.

The school strives to provide the best service to its stake holders within its philosophy, mission, vision and goals. Every student of the school emerges a winner in the bargain with the confidence and discipline to be a successful survivor in the dynamic world to which they are thrown once they leave the portals of the school. To achieve its goals the school expands and adds on to its infrastructure and it is in an ever growing mode.
